Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) make up a significant portion of jobs in most developed and developing countries, typically ranging from 60% to 70%. These types of businesses also create a disproportionately large number of new jobs. While younger firms have been shown to create more employment than older ones, less than half of startups survive for more than 5 years. This is due to a number of factors (including, but not limited to):

1. Running out of funding and personal money. Cashflow management is one of the most important skills that a budding entrepreneur should learn and develop very quickly. As it is often said, Cash Is King!!
2. Misreading market demand. Businesses exist to solve problems in society. If the problem is misunderstood, or the size of the problem (and therefore the opportunity) are not adequately quantified, this will lead to a decline in sales due to flat or reduced demand for the company's products and services.
3. Weak management/team. The people running the business venture are a core component of the success of the company. Hard work, relationship management, product knowledge, reliability, integrity and perseverance are the minimum essential skills required by the people that operate any startup that intends to thrive over the long term.
4. Other major reasons for startup failures are: pricing/cost issues, poor customer service, user-unfriendly products, poor sales & marketing, and not being able to deal with competitors.
